Events and Programs  -  2010 and

2009 Year in Review


We are in the process of developing the 2010 event and program schedule.

All programs are open to the public and without charge. Unless otherwise noted, programs followed by a short business meeting, will be held in the WSCS Hall, 465 South Sterling Road, South Sterling, beginning at 1pm on the 1st Monday of the month.  Check for changes to program topics, speakers, times or locations in the local papers or by contacting Bernadine Lennon at 570-857-0882.

 

January, February, March: No membership meetings

2009 Year in Review in Pictures

 

Member Tom Parry spoke on the history of Camp Wisawanik

at the April 2009 Membership Meeting.

 

Guest Speaker John Layton presented the

History of the Carlton Family at our May 2009 Membership Meeting.

 

Wallenpaupack Area South Elementary School

Principal Dr. Nancy Simon incorporated the Society's ice harvesting tool and photographic display  in a lesson plan for 55 Fourth Graders in May 2009.

 

 

Society Member Bill Brennan organized a trip to the Delaware and Hudson Canal House located in White Mills in May 2009. 

Dr. Walter Barbe hosted the group.

 

For the past several years, GDHS members volunteered to clean the

Albright Bennett Cemetery in Newfoundland.

Civil War reenactor Jo Ann Bogdanovicz presented a program to the Wallenpaupack Area South Elementary School's Fourth and Fifth Grade Students in May 2009.  The program focused on a child's life during the Civil War.  Joining Jo Ann were Kelly Bollard and Maria Sophia Bogdanovicz.

 

For the 8th year, GDHS has recognized the graduates of Greene-Dreher High School at their 50th class reunion at our June potluck luncheon.  Shown in photo are Standing: Janice Smith Rohlf, Kenneth Hollister, Gay Brown Williams, Joyce Bartleson Manhart, Janet Barnes Beck; Seated: Gail Hazelton Madden, Carol Reichel Millard, Dr Robert Rochfort, Sandy Rohrbacker Toy.

 

Society member Fred Schoenagel presented the history of Civil War

Company B, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry which was composed of men

 from Pike County at the July membership meeting.

 

Civil War reenactor presented "Gettysburg: The Aftermath"

during our July Open House.

 

Quilter Rhonda Robinson presented the history and care of quilts

at the August membership meeting.

 

Society members volunteered at our "Quilts and Fancywork" exhibit for the 2009 Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair.  Shown in picture are Collections Chair Jeanne Brown, new members Larry and Mary Kipp and member Sue Noyes.

On December 7, 2009, Society recognized the following community members for their contribution to historic preservation:

George Stone and Ed Kaier for preservation of the Houck Dam;

Phyllis Vetter for creating and producing a DVD of the Houck Dam repair;

Greene Township Supervisors Mary Ann Hubbard, Tim Jones and Ed Simon for their support of the Society for over 30 years;

Roger Altemier for landscaping, drainage and handicap accessibility improvements to the WSCS Hall;

Janet Ford for preservation and adaptive reuse of the La Anna Chapel.
